SEGAMETSI WAS ESTABLISHED TO MEET THE NEED OF BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THE FORMAL AND INFORMAL SECTORS.

 

Business people are often willing and able to contract | contribute financially, into the INFORMAL SECTOR via innovative projects. 

 

The gap preventing effective and meaningful participation is the lack of information and understanding of this market.

Mpume is an Chief Executive Officer of Finlay and Associates, first woman president of SAPOA, co-founding member of Noah and trustee of the Noah Sustainability Trust. She is a Co-founder and Managing Director of Sigma Lifts and Escalators (Pty) Ltd, serves as Chairman of Otis (Pty) Ltd. She is also an Independent Non-Executive Director of Growthpoint Properties Ltd. and serves as a Director of The South African Property Owners Association

Khumo received her education and training on social development at Wits and in Israel. She has extensive experience in the international donor community and has sat on overseas donor boards and committees for a number of years.

People and communities are our core focus

STEWARDSHIP is the fundamental principle for success. Stewardship will remain with the community in order to truly uplift the community.

PARTNERSHIPS involving various (management, leadership, technical, financial, operational) stakeholders are fundamental to the successful implementation of the project. The communities and their leaders are the most important partners required for success.

The financial viability of the project is extremely sensitive to the MANAGEMENT of the administrational, procedural and human resources. The concept ergonomically systemises the management processes in order to create as efficient an environment as possible and is continually under review in order to enhance dynamic improvements.

TRAINING is one of the cornerstones of the CARE model. It starts with “Foundational Training”, then continues with “Skills Training” and ultimately rounds it off with formal training. This function will be part of the employee training program.

SHARED VALUES are extremely important to successful project delivery. A value statement and associated checks and balances will always be available for scrutiny, to ensure the highest standards.

It is a fundamental non-negotiable for ACCOUNTABILITY for all activities and at all levels. Financial and activity measurement and control is essential for long-term sustainability.

TRANSPARENCY will be employed at all times and be expected by all role players.

FOUNDATIONAL STRATEGY

Our foundational strategy first ascertains the level of education and training required by the community.

We then assess the health status and infrastructure of the community, followed by commercial opportunities.

 

Without catering for commercial enterprises within the community fabric, the community is condemned to be economically unsustainable regardless of housing typology.

 

These preceding steps determine the urban and infrastructure design for the resultant village around which we build the community.

 

We can never get a re-creation of community and heal our society without giving our citizens a sense of belonging.

FACILITATION

Job creation is a by product of financial sustainability within the community. We have to identify viable and commercially sustainable businesses from the existing community assets. This leads to community driven, community owned, and community implemented solutions including housing and infrastructure provision.

 

Entrepreneurial screening is critical to identify potential entrepreneurs. Correctly identification and resultant training and education linked to the opportunities inherent within the community empowers them to become the future commercial leaders and job providers of their community.

TRAINING - 1,418 TRAINED

  • New Venture Training program at NBCC – 278 graduating with a SAQA certification,
  • 185 woman TiAuto Day Care Centre Business Training
  • 185 principals / supervisors, mainly woman UKUPHUMELA Simulcast training
  • 800 people, mainly woman trained in new business development skills
  • Solar Installation course – 150 installers, 55 woman

 

SOLAR RENTAL CO-OPERATIVES – 900 FAMILIES

  • Three Solar Rental cooperatives: Khatorus, New Jerusalem and Springs renting out + 900 home solar units affecting 900 under-privilege families.

SOLAR INSTALLATIONS – TENDERS EKURHULENI – 12,000 FAMILIES

  • To date Segametsi has successfully installed 12,000 units in designated informal settlements. The balance of the tender amounts to a further 15,000 units

SOLAR INSTALLATIONS – TENDER DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY – PILOT 800 FAMILIES

  • Pilot in Kuruman, Segametsi installed 800 units in designated rural settlements. The balance of the tender amounts to a further 10,000 units.

FEEDING VULNERABLE CHILDREN - + 1,338,000 MEALS TO DATE

  • Ti-Auto program, 482 children, 3 provinces – 4 years, + 705,000 meals
  • SAPPI & Lignotech program, 250 children, KZN South Coast – 3 years, + 275,000 meals
  • NBCC program, 245 children, East Rand, - 4 years, + 358,000 meals

 

SEGAMETSI HOPE (SA) ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT FUND - + 70 MICRO LOANS

  • To date + 70 loans were granted, total value of R1,3 million.

SEGAMETSI INCUBATOR – 5 WOMAN DIRECTORS, 10 NEW BUSINESSES, + 500 NEW JOBS

  • 5 woman on a Company Act, Directors & Corporate Governance training program. 10 NEW companies under the Incubator and projected to be independent within 4-5 years employing by estimation 500 new jobs

ROAD TO WELLNESS – 2,000 SCREENINGS

  • To date Segametsi and Dr. JM Klopper, have screened 2,000 people to assist them with a Road to Wellness guideline. This program has only recently being launched and impact will grow dramatically.

CO-OPERATIVE REGISTRATIONS – 30 CO-OPERATIVES, EMPLOYING 150 PEOPLE

  • To date Segametsi has successfully registered 30 co-operatives employing a minimum of 150 people.
